Replace an Electrical Outlet

Loose outlet? Spark when you plug something in? Here's how to swap it safely — and when to call us.

- New outlet (15A or 20A) $3–$6

Turn off the breaker and verify with a voltage tester.

Remove the cover plate and unscrew the old outlet.

Disconnect the wires (note which is which: black, white, green).

Connect wires to the new outlet — black to brass, white to silver, green to ground.

Screw it in, replace the plate, and turn the breaker back on.
